About This Episode
Healing after loss is not about forgetting the people we love or leaving grief behind. Sometimes, it is about learning to live in a world that has been permanently changed while discovering that love, meaning, and hope can still exist alongside profound sorrow.
In this episode of The School of Heritage Podcast, Emma Pearson, author of Still Fire Inside: A Memoir on Love, Loss and Life, organisational psychologist, and executive coach, joins us to explore how she navigated devastating personal losses and gradually found ways to reconnect with life, love, and her sense of identity.
Over the past decade, Emma experienced the deaths of her husband, youngest daughter, two brothers, father, and a close friend. These deeply personal experiences transformed her understanding of grief, taking it beyond her professional knowledge into the realities of widowhood, losing a child, and learning to live after repeated heartbreak.
Drawing from her memoir, Still Fire Inside, Emma shares how writing became a way to make sense of experiences that often felt impossible to understand. What began as personal blog reflections eventually grew into a deeply moving exploration of love, loss, identity, resilience, and the human capacity to continue living after life has been irrevocably changed.
Throughout the conversation, Emma reflects on how grief can reshape our understanding of ourselves, why healing does not follow a predictable timeline, and how people can remain open to connection, meaning, and moments of happiness without feeling that they are betraying those they have lost.
She also explores the difficult questions that emerge after profound loss: Who am I now? How do I move forward? And how can I embrace life again when the people who shaped my world are no longer physically present?
This conversation reminds us that healing after loss does not require us to stop grieving. It invites us to recognize that grief and love can coexist, that identity can gradually evolve through painful transitions, and that even after unimaginable heartbreak, there may still be life to embrace.
